World Studies 101: Sindhu (India)

Those from India may be referred to as "Indians" or "Hindus." The Persian word "Sindhu," which was used to describe the inhabitants of the Indus River basin, is where the name "Hindu" first appeared. As we continue our brief travels through humanity and the seven continents it is here where we stop today. As humans with belief systems and Medicine and Magick that inhabit them all, ee will not cover specific practices but cover the major group, or root, on each continent.

SINDHU TRADITIONAL BELIEFS

Sindhu, now officially known as the Republic of India, is a country in the Southern portion of our Eastern Hemisphere. It is the second-most populous country, the seventh-largest country by land area, and the most populous democracy in the world. Over 90% of the world's Hindus live here. Hinduism is one of the world's oldest religions, according to many scholars, with roots and customs dating back more than 4,000 years. Today, with about 900 million followers, Hinduism is the third-largest “book religion”  behind Christianity and Islam. Most of the World’s Practitioners of Hindu live in India. But, there are small sects of other practices, too.

Although there are also substantial populations of Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, and Jains - there remains many adherents of Folk Medicine and Magick traditions here. For most Sindhu, faith is extremely important. As such, let us take a look at Dravidian.

DRAVIDIAN
Dravida is an agamic religion, meaning “passed down”. It is a non-Vedic religion that is a collection of Tamil and Sanskrit scriptures chiefly constituting the methods of temple construction, how to worship Deities, creations of  murti, philosophical doctrines, meditative practices, attainment of sixfold desires and four kinds of yoga. It is one of the most complete collections of worship known to humankind.

Those that walked the Path of Dravida, worships/ed tutelary deity and held sacred all flora and fauna. Dravida linguistic influence on early Vedic religion is evident as many of these features are found to have already been present in the oldest known Indo-Aryan language, the language of the Rigveda (c. 1500 BCE), which also includes over a dozen words borrowed from Dravidian. The linguistic evidence for Dravidian impact grows increasingly strong as we move from the Samhitas down through the later Vedic works and into the classical post-Vedic literature. Terms can be traced through many beliefs as originating from India.

The tribes of the Andaman Islands nurture rich Knowledge about the medicinal plants of their surroundings. Acquired by trial and error over millennia, the ethnomedicinal plants of Great Andamanese, Onges and Jarawa are critical to know before the Knowledge is lost to time… or civilization, forever. Medicinally, Indian Bay Leaf is typically used to treat varied sicknesses by the tribe’s Medicine Elders. Magickally, it is used for Protection and Abundance, for example, it is burned with the Intent of “a good fishing day”.

Root Paths

There is no “right” or “wrong’ answer for these Contemplations. These are simply an exploration of the world around you. Sit with what you have observed. FEEL. Divine. Commune with Higher Self.

Alkebulan.
Zhong Guo.
…and now Sindhu.

Think About It
Can you see the root of more Paths in Indian Traditional Religions? Which do you see?

Molee

The Jarawa do not eat these mollusks, but utilize what they contain as a commodity traded for questionable items from outside societies. Outsiders have placed “value” on tis item of Matter, not the Jarawa.

Pearls are believed to signify innocence and faith on most Paths. Something the Jarawan have in their “child-like” state provided for by Mother Nature. Outsiders have exploited that many times. What do you think?

For Magick, to the Jarawa and to Practitioners that use pearls to enhance personal integrity, this “precious irritant” brings truth forward, grows sincerity, inhibits immodest behaviors and advances Wisdom.

Jarawa Tribe

Here is a video of one of the last tribes of Sindhu, India. Two races of people occupy India. One, as you will see, are those native to India and are not “Aryan”. They appear more “African”. Remember the path you have taken to arrive here? These people were pushed away as far as they could go - thousands of years ago during the invasions from the "North West".

(PLEASE NOTE: Although any post at TCMed may illicit a “political” response from you, we are NOT political, nor are we trying to “sway” you in any way from your current political belief system. Politics has very little place in a magick school outside of it being a protected right to choose in most places as Free Willed human beings.)

This is the Jarawa people of the Andaman Islands. The Jarawa are said to be descended from some of the first humans to leave Alkebulan. Like most tribal peoples who live self-sufficiently on their ancestral lands, the Jarawa continue to thrive, and their numbers are steadily growing. Descended from Alkebulan, but having more in common genetically with people from Zhong Guo. Isn’t that interesting? We are truly ONE PEOPLE. If only the “human safari” would stop as requested by the indigenous.

SUBMISSION: WA4 TUE JARAWA TRIBE Qs (Due by Sunday)

WRITE ONE PARAGRAPH or more ANSWERING:
It is often intriguing to conceive of tribes of people remaining in such a "civilized" world. We have to ask ourselves sincerely, "how far have we really come?"

How should we interact with those not living like us, those that say they want none of what we “industrialized” represent?

Should Knowledge be shared with “outsiders” from those that choose to live in the natural state?
