Some Native, Some Hoodoo: Poke Weed
Pokeweed is one of our favorite common Plant Allies. It will grow almost anywhere moisture is residing. It is both edible and medicinal when cooked. Thrice. (Three times) It has a long history of use by the indigenous of many lands for everything from a cold, to a dye, all the way to being used as a food source.
The young shoots are boiled through two changes of water with the third being where you can season or imbue it, cook it with eggs, etc. Pokeweed has a taste similar to asparagus for most who consume it. The berries are cooked and the resulting liquid is still sometimes used to color canned fruits and vegetables.
MEDICINAL
The root is alterative, anodyne, anti-inflammatory, cathartic, expectorant, hypnotic, narcotic and purgative. It is used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, tonsillitis, mumps, glandular fever and other complaints involving swollen glands, chronic catarrh, bronchitis and diseases related to a compromised immune system it has potential as an HIV treatment drug and is currently being tested by private facilities. There is also talk of its use with breast cancer. There are several Rootworkers, Conjurers, etc, that have found the way to make the Native poultices for early stages of the disease and it is being studied. Furthermore, for those who have had a radical mastectomy without lymph removal, it seems to reduce the swelling in the remaining tissue caused by lymphedema.

MAGICKAL
Pokeweed is a masculine plant, it's Element is Fire, and corresponds with the planet Mars or Mercury. It is an intense Protection and Hex-breaking herb. It also promotes Courage and Strength, and Development of Self and enhances magick. It even has a reputation for aiding in the Crafting of hexes when used a certain way. With it's defensive qualities, it will protect and defend you while you create your working. It's berries have long been used as an ink and make a wonderful magickal ink for writing in special books or inscribing sacred items and tools.

Sandstone
Comprising as much as 20 percent of the Earth’s crust, sandstones are of significant scientific interest and are frequently utilized as indicators of various geologic processes, such as erosion. The rocks are more generally used, however, as a construction material and appear as basic components in a large number of buildings throughout the world.
Red sandstone, for instance, was particularly popular in central England before industrialization and the invention of the train made it easier to import heavy materials from other areas due to the region's proximity to a thick sequence of Devonian rocks called Old Red Sandstone and a similar layer of rocks formed in the Triassic period classically referred to as New Red Sandstone. In some locations, however, such as southern Africa, red sandstone has been more often utilized for carvings and other artistic purposes.
Red sandstone, which is especially known for its great beauty in the western United States, often forms spectacular vistas and natural structures that serve as tourist attractions. Large red sandstone monoliths that jut out from the Earth towards the sky, for example, can be seen at various national landmarks, parks, and such places as the Garden of the Gods, a 1,350-acre park located in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Eons of wind and moving Water have carved out stunning sandstone canyons and winding mazes in many locales, including southern Utah where the breathtaking Bryce Canyon National Park is located. Hundreds of thousands of visitors partake of these and other geologically sculpted red sandstone wonders each year.
MEDICINAL
Sandstone treats wounds and broken bones. It improves water retention and assists in the restoration of degenerative eyesight, weak fingernails and thinning hair.
MAGICKAL
Sandstone is a stone of creativity. It helps to build and strengthen the cohesiveness and solidarity within relationships. Encourages truth and promotes clarity in thought and sight. Sandstone balances one's reality and facilitates ease of movement and change. Sitting along sandstone outcroppings is a great place to meditate, grounding you and opens the minds eye.

Human Ego & Shadow
Just as it says, these are the deification of Earth Powers That Be, Spirits, or Energies that we already know exist and can feel the presence of inside of each of us. We have seen indigenous peoples around the world, unencumbered by outside society, feel these energies. Know them. Embrace them and hold gratitude in your hearts and clarity in your mind’s eye for the Expereinces that have been brought to you.
Our Spirit KNOWS these powers are here too. The difficulty in sensing these Energies mostly exists when Ego is not in check or there is Shadow Work to be done. Some do believe, however, no matter how hard you try, an individual is not going to have the Experience they are trying to – IF Ego or Shadow remains unchecked.
Some Practitioners even feel that if you are clouded by superficial things and Self-Made constraints, it will make your magick that much harder to attune to Universal Energy, making your Craft often ineffectual.
Let’s test that Ego. Let us question that Shadow.
Again, think back on the last few weeks, or the week so far. Think of a moment that upset you or “pissed you off”, where you may have had a “knee jerk” reaction.
Sit with that.
Think about that moment that came to mind.
What was it? What triggered you?
Hold that moment in your mind’s eye.
Does thinking about it again raise your ire? Does it make you emotional?
Question it.
Why is that emotional response elicited in you?
Was it projecting your expectation of Self onto another? In other words, were you expecting someone outside of your Self to react in the “same way” you would? You have to ask yourself, “why would they?”. They are not you. Those are conditional expectations.
To assume matters as these are to always be in our “favor” is considered Cognitive Bias, or Egocentrism. Those outside of ourselves are having a very different Experience than we are, even if matched identically, they still stand in a separate Space and Time than we do.
IN THE BEGINNING
Ego and Shadow both begin to develop the minute we are born. Primarily these are effected by our Caregivers. These perspectives begin at first to naturally mold into shape and then as we grow they remain pliable, our environments and traumas, little traumas and Big Traumas, “Nature vs Nurture”, begin to effect us. This carries on throughout our life beginnings. This effects our magickal beings, our connections to the Universe and the entities around us, including other humans too.
EGO/SHADOW WORK
We are about to work more deeply on both Ego and Shadow for the sake of empowering our Magickal Self.
