Beginning Practicum
Element Air

A little while after our night of Witches New Year celebrations and the turning of light towards darker times, Element Air can be felt to change too as we prepare for Winter. We begin to go inside our Self at this time, just as Mother Earth is going within for Her Great Cycle too. We begin to look at where we have been this year past and where we are going in the coming year. A new year that will spring upon us at the Winter Solstice when the light shifts again and begins anew. Ever so slowly, the night gives way to day.

Between now and then, we Practitioners continue to review our Medicine & Magick, our purpose, our Paths, how we walk them, our Life and all that that entails. We examine everything around us. For the more adept at this Involutionary time, it is a matter of listening to Spirit in meditation. Our Higher Self, or Spirit, will show us - guide us - where we need to Focus. We are often shown something we need to examine a little more closely.

Everything you are shown is not always something you, the Ego Self, want to work on though. Nor is everything we are shown “for us”. Maybe there is a neglected part of ourselves or Shadow that needs addressing that involves another person. No matter what we are shown, we are wise to look at it closely and grow.

The Air signs, Gemini – Libra – Aquarius, possess the virtue of knowledge. This does not mean they are more Crafty or intelligent than other Practitioners but they are generally well rounded, having worn or are wearing many hats, and are often more informed easily about what they are choosing to be a part of. The words ”spirit”, “inspire”, “expire”, and “aspire”, all derived from the Latin word spirare , meaning “to breathe”. Air is associated with all of these. Typically found as a positive symbol, the wind is seen as Divine breath and the power it embodies. It is said on some Paths, that All That Is was manifested “in one breath”.

On other Paths, the Element Air is associated with the East, which is said to guard what is called the First Watchtower. On other Paths, it is of the North and simply has Divine presence and Unconditional Love, no “guarding” needed as we are all one. What is it for you? Your Path?

On many Paths, the Elements are simply seen as “equals”, not something to be controlled, commanded, or subjugated. Air is one of five elements that appear on both Magickal & Medicinal Paths, Wiccan and Pagan traditions included. (Even though Wicca was particularly influenced by the Golden Dawn and Aleister Crowley's mysticism in many ways, so was the Christian Path by its many “thinkers”.)

As we have learned on most Paths that recognized Elements, Air represents intellect, mental intention, and connection to universal life force. Those that descend from or are born under the Zodiac sign of Air often have the ability to see situations from an intellectual perspective without being clouded by emotion. Air signs are all about ideas, achievements, and correct information, good – bad – indifferent, the information just has to be “correct”.

ELEMENT AIR ALIGNMENT
Other aspects found with individuals who have the Element  Air in their natal charts have aspects related to traveling, learning, communicating, socialization, and thinking. According to Plato, the Element of Air is associated with the octahedron and is both hot and wet or humid. Air heated, becomes fire, cooled, becomes water, cooled more, earth. Because of this, some Practitioners believe that ailments related to respiratory system should be monitored over time with those born under this sign. Upper respiratory infections can be a problem for those aligned with Element Air.

ELEMENT AIR IN TAROT
In Tarot, Element Air is often represented by a suit of swords or its equivalent. Historically, the suit also equates to spades in a standard deck of playing cards. Tarot suits use Element Air to represent concepts such as logic and reasoning, as well as intellect and communication. When looking at tarot, the weather, or anything involving “air” for divination, it is useful to know how else Element Air presents itself for interpretation. For example, when viewing tarot, it can be pictured as clouded or clear. The absence of Element Air may also be in a scene of desolation. On the other hand, trees can be shown “blowing in the wind” to show how that concept is manifesting.

As previously stated, whether you believe in the Orishas (Yoruba) of natural elements, Airts (Wiccan), Spirits (First Nationer), Watchtowers (Hermetic) or Guardians, when you “call quarters”, “call corners” or call Spirits, you are calling the Elements/Elementals to aid you in your work.

We also learned how to call upon Element Air to enhance our Works or “vision” with mapping. (Please take a moment to review any previous Energy Work necessary to refresh.)

No matter how you wish for Element Air to be present for you, it is now the time to ask yourself how you viewed it this year.

Did you work with it?

Have you worked with it?

Did you take it for granted?

How does it present to you?

How do you show gratitude for its presence?

Whether it be the air we breathe or the force of the breeze, Element Air is a force that can both give life and take it away… in a breath. It too is a power to consider and a force to be reckoned with. It can grow the flame, or extinguish the light. ELEMENT FIRE.

In its absence it can drown us with perspiration, or freeze us blowing to our bones. ELEMENT WATER.

Without its power to move gases, air can starve the soil, thereby starving all organic – obligate aerobic life. ELEMENT EARTH.

Element Air is one of the strongest Elements on this planet.

Just ask the Fae. ;-)
