Cartomancy - Tarot
Five - V - 5
Minor Arcana
As we continue our Journey through tarot, we look at what 5 brings us…
Generally speaking, 5 is a good number. Informally the number was utilized in the phrase “Five by Five” to mean “good signal strength” or ‘loud and clear”. An older example of this use is in 1946, recounting a wartime conversation. The phrase was also used in a follow novel, The Blackboard Jungle, in the same way.
In numerology, 5 is associated with the ruling planet Mercury.
It is considered to be a good number that brings luck in life, and those who belong to this number are intelligent, adventurous, and have good communication skills. However, their negative traits include talking too much and overconfidence. EGO WORK IS ESSENTIAL. While Ego is the thing that keeps us safe, it is also the thing that hurts others and our Self when Unhealthy Ego is not healed.
Five of Swords
GENERAL - Spade ♠
Things to consider based on surrounding cards: Thoughts or important people. Self or others being overtaken by force, consciously or subconsciously. This card often means that we will overcome the situation but may do so alone or end up alone as sometimes we are not ready for what is to come. This can go both ways. This is why it is imperative to think of others. It doesn ot benefit us to diminish or treat them poorly, as they can freely walk away too.
Play the tape out. Are we surrendering or Self sabotaging?
Conquest by unfair means”, “theft”, “empty victory”, A “know it all”, thinks of Self as higher than others. Ego work is often needed as very negative behaviors can be present.
This card also indicates there are mixed feelings in regard to a workplace.
Stubbornness. We are being asked if we VALIDATED the other person before giving constructive input or opinion. *see above ♠
HEALTH
Energetically draining
SPIRIT
The challenges we overcome give way to the Wisdom, Strength, and Empathy to heal others. This card may also indicate a change in spiritual paths or practices.
Five of Pentacles
GENERAL - Coin; Disk, Diamond ♦
When this card appears, let The Querent speak if a reading is being done for another. This person may be having feelings of being “Left out in the cold” or “not heard”. They may feel destitute or be in the midst of difficult times.
In this RWS deck, notice the individual looking up at the “9 Limbed Tree” or “Tree of Life” being formed by the pentacles in the window. This is indicative of Hope and that ANYONE can ask Spirit for ‘help’ with any matter, regardless of what other humans think.
Remember, “the oceans accept all rivers.”
The other aspect to this card is related to a failure of fully grasping Spirit in life. Because that absence has manifested, one may choose to live a nomadic life, away from others, isolating themselves.
Also view this as a sign for the need for RESPITE or a reprieve from a situation.
Some questions we may want to ask:
Who is your crutch?
Does healing need to take place?
Can you hear the answers of YOUR Light?
Consider teaching others through personal Experiences and Life Experiences. Loss, change, or financial changes may be immanent. (Depth of card depends on question asked and surrounding cards.)
DO NOT ASSUME help is needed, or that they are unable to see the answer for themselves. We can lead others to Water, but we cannot make them drink. Sometimes WE are in our OWN way. Use questions to further the reading or approach. You are the “messenger”.
HEALTH
Stress related illnesses are forever present. Self Care is CRUCIAL to avoid them.
SPIRIT
Touch spiritual times. The world is NOT against us, DO NOT ISOLATE.
Five of Wands
GENERAL - Rod; Stave; Club ♣
Many who view this card feels those in it are not “fighting” but there may be chaos. It is saying to have fun in your endeavor but remain aware of the surroundings. Verify the action is truly “safe”.
Is it a “friendly” debate?
The number five in the Minor Arcana are usually how to handle other human beings. Motive should be validating, encouraging, and honoring.
Questions that may be asked: “Are there too many cooks in the kitchen?” or “Is the group dynamic HEALTHY?” These are geared to explore the question asked for the rading.
HEALTH
Successfully fighting illness
SPIRIT
Spiritual conflict. Clouded vision of Path. Know the WHY as to the Paths we walk.
Five of Cups
GENERAL - Chalice; Heart ♥
This is one of many emotionally and psychologically deep cards in tarot. For many Practitioners, this card is indicative of REGRET, or focusing too much on negative emotions or behavior. It all depends on the question asked and the surrounding cards that will define this more.
Consider feelings disappointment, loss, or a shift in consciousness that would make things appear as a loss in Matter. A freely evolving Soul will view this card in a negative light very time. One who is growing spiritually, or in Spirit, will see the “loss” in Matter often a “gain” in Spirit. Again, the surrounding cards help in defining this.
SYMBOLISM
When looking at the symbolism of the card, the varying colors of liquid that are spilled from the cups are indicative of different types of loss that may be Experienced through Matter in the sense of Physical, Emotional, or Psychological “loss” or “gain”. This person is not recognizing what they still have in Self, or Self value.
Each cup represents an energy point which directly links to the loss being Experienced:
SHADOW COLOR IN CUPS
Shadow Work is CRUCIAL in both Magick and Medicine. If this card comes up as we are Working with some deeper traumas, consider the following:
Darkest Red (left top cup): Root: Physical loss
We store things like rape, murder, loss of life, war, famine, natural disasters, etc. here. The traumas of those who came before us are all “recorded” in the Root Chakra. These Experiences are passed down from generation to generation and create unconscious patterns of behaviors. Not healing this point will suspend us where we stand spiritually.
Red Orange (middle): Sacral: Emotional loss
A closed sacral energy point can make us feel detached from our own emotions of Self as well as the emotions of the those around us that we truly love and care for. A blockage here may give us feelings of being isolated and anxious to be alone and lonely. It a vicious cycle that can cause loneliness as well as anxiety symptoms to repeat and return.
Green (Yellow - left bottom): Solar Plexus/Heart: Psychological loss; an individual with a prolonged deficiency of the Solar Plexus can develop a deep-seated “victim” mentality, neediness, deteriorated self-esteem, as well as a feeling of helplessness and lack of ownership over one's life and choices
(There is speculation that the cards colors were limited to what could be seen with the choices available.)
Solar Plexus + Root = DEEP SHADOW WORK in this card.
Which do cup you see first?
OTHER MEANINGS
The varied spilled colors can also be indicative of things that were tried and failed. It can also be indicative of a person CHOOSING to knock chalices down as poison (green), OR “poisonous behavior” or “toxic behavior” is present from another. This person is protecting themselves and are upset that they have had to do so. Note the dark “mourning” cloak.
Explore the emptiness of the chalices behind. In word or thought they may “have your back” but in deed, they are empty words.
Who may this be in your life? Or, is this you telling another you will be there for them yet are not?
The Querent may be able to explore this more with additional cards.
Notice in the back of the scene is the River of Consciousness, knowing the Matter, solace and stability with the fortress and if we notice off to the right is Eternity, the Sun indicates “hope”.
Other things to consider relative to other cards in spread, is asking if these approaches chosen served the Querent well. Have they made the statement “I am going to change”, or has someone around them made this statement? This card in a spread may indicate that they will not “change” at this time.
This is often a card of Loss and Reconsideration. One is advised to NOT let expectations guide the decision being made when a 5 of Cups shows.

V The Heirophant
Major Arcana
According to de Gébelin, "hierophant" was the title of the chief priest in the Eleusinian Mysteries (an ancient Greek ritual). Historical evidence shows that use of the name did not resurface until cards were being produced in Northern Italy in the first half of the 15th century.
It is believed to be derived from the Egyptian Priest who carried a small booklet inside their robes to which they would utilize as a guide for answers to questions posed by those who sought them out for Divine Guidance.
This role is perceived as a Spiritual or Holy leader, or someone guiding others through spiritual growth or evolution, working only to the benefit of others and their Consciousness. “giving blessings” as indicated by the gesture of “pointing up”. A True Servants Heart. (Waits, female Pope)
SYMBOLOGY
SCEPTER
Three pronged wand OR scepter is a symbol of “autonomous power” as it was carried by Egyptian Goddess, Gods, Pharaohs and Priests alike. Osiris was often called "the Great Sekhem" or "Foremost of Powers" because he carried the Sehkem Scepter. Hence, the sekhem was often used as a symbol of the underworld deity.
CROSSED KEYS
Indicative of natural wisdom that can be shared with all. They represent the balance between the conscious and subconscious minds and the unlocking of mysteries.
Crosses on robe, carpet. 9 to three sequence. These are indicative of Physical, Mental and Spiritual realms of Consciousness.
This crossing is symbolic of both Inner and Outer knowledge (Esoteric, or Hidden, Knowledge),
ROSES AND LILIES
Take note of the Robe of Roses and Robe of Lilies on each individual. In the Hermetic tradition, which these creators of this tarot were heavily influenced by, the rose represents Wisdom and lily is Compassion. If we take the rose as feminine and the lily as masculine, then we have exactly the association of feminine and masculine energy that we see on the Tree of Life.
Scepter is equal in energy to the masculine and feminine.
Some other meanings of this card are indicative of one who rose because of reading, enlightenment, learning. One who chose to increase personal Knowledge.
HEART PATH
This card reminds us of the Heart’s Path in Spirit. Healing Shadow. It reminds us to transcend Ego. Divine Force is within us ALL.
COLOR RED
Life, power, authority
Some further questions to explore with this card’s presence:
“Where does one fit in my life?” “One person has set up life, but have I?” “Where do I fit into their life?”

XIV Temperance
Major Arcana
In alchemy, Element Fire represents emotions such as Passion, Love, Anger, and Hate, which are sometimes referred to as “fiery” emotions. Aristotle (again, he is who influenced the Hermetics, and the Hermeticcs/Golden Dawn influenced, Wicca – who in turn influenced many Practitioners today.) labeled it as hot and dry, and it is represented by the colors red and orange, as well as the humor yellow bile.
Alchemy is noted on the chest, Fire/Masculine.
KNOWLEDGE
This card asks you “how to apply knowledge learned in initiation/on Path”. We often find this card sayin, “this is what I have, how do I turn it into something that benefits me?” Temperance is a card of Self Discovery.
SYMBOLOGY

SUN DISK
