Magickal Tools 102
Magickal Alphabets

Bottom line, any alphabet can be magickal. Intent is everything.

Know your purpose behind the alphabet.

“In some traditions, it’s common to use a magical alphabet when writing spells, rituals or incantations in the Book of Shadows.”

Many people like the idea of using a magical alphabet because it is something that will keep information secret and protected. We can think of it as a code language – if the average person who might look at our Book of Shadows cannot read the language, there is no way for them to know what we are writing about, or what magick we are doing. So, if we have the time to learn Theban (or some other magical alphabet) and become fluent enough that we can read it without having to check our notes every time we want to cast a circle, then we may want to use it in our writings.

NECESSITY
That said, many Pagans today no longer feel a need to hide who they are or what they believe. Many Practitioners of all Paths live openly, without fear of persecution. So, is it necessary to use a magical alphabet to hide our writings? Not necessarily – unless we feel it is important, or we are a part of a magical tradition that requires it. Or, we may simply continue being persecuted by family and friends and this gives us solace.

The choice is yours, but the tool is there.

Contemplations 102
Think About It

What do you think or feel about today’s material? Is it something that has interested you? Will you place a bookmark for later or will you incorporate this knowledge into your Practice?

As it is said, “handwriting is liken to a fingerprint. No two people write the same.”

Gematria

Gematria (/ɡəˈmeɪtriə/; Hebrew: גמטריא‎ or gimatria גימטריה, plural גמטראות or גימטריאות, gimatriot) is an alphanumeric code of assigning a numerical value to a name, word or phrase according to its letters. A single word can yield several values depending on the cipher used. It is essentially what you will be doing if you decide to create a magickal alphabet.

Each symbol, or letter, or pictograph, etc, will have its own meaning. This is why “gematria”, a modern pagan study, is closely related to “kabbalah” (or Caballa) an ancient Hebrew study.

Let us look at an example: LETTER

Letter when broken apart has one L, two Es, two Ts, and an R. Each letter has a different meaning, depending on whose definition we use. Let us chose to use the Kabbalah for our example.

L: Artistic and Personal Expression, predominant as it is the first letter of the word being studied.

E: The energetic vibration of the Es, being doubled, is strong in this word. The letter represents Communication.

T: Again, the energetic vibration is strong as the letter is doubled. T is representative of Diplomacy and Cooperation.

R: This letter is indicative of New Beginnings, Overcoming Obstacles and New Growth.

Together, these alphanumeric symbols spell, “L-E-T-T-E-R” and are indicative of the magnitude of that item. There is value in what is being said in the letter. Good. Bad. Indifferent. As we know, there are always “negative” connotations to most modern “religions”.

Looking at the negative kabbalistic connotations of the letter “L” alone would make me look deeper into the letters, not just gematrially, but also graphologically. How were they written? How were the letters formed relative to the message? What is this person saying to me? I would have to read “between the lines” as many energies from the subconscious manifest in our writing.

And no, we can ONLY stop this somewhat by “typing” our letters. Then, we simply look at our grammar and we can plainly see whether there is “sincerity” to what is being written. We can see Ego statements. Shadow statements. Intent. And many other aspects of the human psyche bleeding through.

To many Practitioners, this is the number one reason to create your OWN alphabet. There are less attitudes of writing that can be deciphered as only YOU know what you are writing. Beyond that, we would have to find two similar documents to compare what was being written to determine Intent.

Recall, physiognomy reads bodies, gematria reads writing, more so lettering.

We can “read” others if we hone it in and PRACTICE. ;-)

Graphology

“The study of handwriting” has been around since we began writing. It is the analysis of the physical characteristics and patterns of handwriting with attempt to identify the writer, indicate the psychological state at the time of writing, or evaluate personality characteristics. Once a “soft science” it has become more recognized and deeply studied by once nay-sayers like the CIA, FBI, and other foreign intelligence agencies.

At one time, only Practitioners of Arcane Arts studied “products of people” as ways to “read” others and themselves. We have always known this about each other.

Because the world was ”busy” doing things of Self and Ego, this became a “lost Art”. Now, there are schools dedicated to its relearning. A known great use for graphology for the individual Practitioner is discover of Self.

Graphology can be used to analyze your own handwriting and find places of Shadow that needs addressing as well as medical conditions. For example, someone as a young adult writes a certain way. As they become older they develop a brain tumor. They notice the presence of “something” because their handwriting drastically changed. Another example is a young person writes a particular way, and a traumatic accident happens. They too then notice a handwriting change.

Hence, Shadow work.

Graphology has a long standing of magickal correspondences and you would be served well to take a look deeper.

CHALLENGE: Write a sentence or two before you follow the link below.
What you write on and what you write with do not matter. *Make sure the sentence is MORE than two words, or simple “subject and verb.”

Example: “The quick red fox jumped over the lazy brown dog.”
