Beginning Practicum
Magickal Tools

(excepts from Reverend Richoz' early Book of Shadows © 1987)

Sometimes I simply free think and write, going where the thoughts take me, looking up things, contemplating things. This is one of those times.

CAVEATS
In the world over is the basic thought that ANYTHING can be utilized as a “magickal tool” or a tool for Medicine. Though, it is typical throughout the world in most cultures to ask permission of that item’s natural energy, or vibration, before assigning it the task of a Practitioners intended purpose. If we do not want to ask, consider “why”. Do we feel we have “dominance” over all that is? What does this stem from? Is this a Shadow holdover from the patriarchy of the last 3000 yars? Or, is our Ego still be there? Why are we “too good” OR why do we not feel the need to respect all that is around us? We are wise to explore THAT before taking on the manipulation of the energies around us in Magicks and Medicines.

We are wise to least CLEAN the item so we do not inherit anything that is energetically attached to it. Most things on this plane are willing to help a Practitioner along in their Journey, even if they do not align with us. Unlike us, most things are “without condition” or are divinely in a state of Unconditional Love to begin with. Practitioners are wise to remember that whatever that tool it may be for them, however it is utilized, may it be for their highest benefit. No matter how their Magick or Medicine is perceived, it is wise to have that tool call to us personally, “feel right” or “correct”, and is a fair representation of the Personal Self, the YOU, your Higher Self, YOUR PATH, not someone else’s. Again, the caveat is, “if we are not choosing to follow a specifically named Path.”

OBTAINING
Some of the tools that Practitioners will utilize throughout their Experiences in Matter will depend on the environment in which they choose to live. Most “earth based” Practitioners will utilize what is around them in order to pull in the strongest vibrations for their connections to home or land. They will find things such as local Stone Allies, Plant Allies, and even detritus wood from local Tree People, soil, Insect Ally husks, or fallen feathers. WE can even consider the use of vacated shells, snake skins that have been shed or vacated, etc. These are the MOST powerful things that are typically gifted to you from Mother Nature, this too is part of our cycle that we do not embrace, death. As energy would have it in the ebb and flow, if the Practitioner is one that is a giver of offerings, Mother Nature and the Elements give back to that Practitioner typically in MANY ways. Do not arrogantly scoff at finding a dead deer or cat to bring into your Magick or Medicine as Death is part of the cycle and is considered the gift that She is providing for you sometimes.

CREATING ANCESTRAL SPACE
A Practitioner that sets up an Ancestor altar, or sacred space for communing with Ancestors or Elders, or simply a chosen space containing pictures of family is considered to be creating an Ancestor Altar. Mentors (non relative) pictures, purposed items, stones, a candle placed with Intent, etc and an offering of food and drink, if you choose, “may you never thirst, … or hunger”, is often given in many tribes and amongst countless Practitioners.

ALTARS TO HEKATE: VENERATING EARTH - FOOD FOR THE DEAD - NECROMANCY TO SOME
Some know Her as Hekate, to others, He is know as .… *Azrael.
Quite often a Practitioner will set out a loved or honored one’s preferred drink or favorite food for certain occasions —or every day. This is Veneration. Celebrants of this ritual may also venerate their Deity, or Divine, and choose to continually leave out fresh food and drink, no matter what they choose to give, it is with Intent.

Other ways that followers of Hekate across many countries have participated in veneration is leaving leftover food from their deipnon, or special dinner that evening, or a day specific TO HER. This leftover is often placed outside the rear door of a Practitioner’s dwelling, Even other Practitioners purposefully, mindfully, place it into the compost or trash with Intent, soft words spoken, “…to Mother Earth, Great Gaia below, … for that which is Hekate’s …or Earth’s. This is especially on nights that are considered Hers in particular, as Her children have claimed them.

***I say these words, “…to the Filth Eater, shall all things return.”

(I connect this to Mother Ocean, who “accepts all Water.”)

We find even more Practitioners who set up Elemental Altars of various offerings, to many different Beings, inside or outside, with food and drink. All of these are typically kept in a ritualistic, personally meaningful, way by the Practitioner or their family.

*Azrael (/ˈæzriəl/; Hebrew: עֲזַרְאֵל, romanized: ʿǍzarʾēl, 'God has helped'; Arabic: عزرائيل, romanized: ʿAzrāʾīl or ʿIzrāʾīl) is the angel of death in some Abrahamic religions, namely Islam and Christian popular culture.

Humans are natural “altar builders”. We can often go into someone’s home and see a collection of photos, or “things” of times past. (We mentioned this above.) Do not tell them what you see. It is not wise to attempt interpreting someone else’s perception that is not Awake, or may not practice as you do. To them, “it’s just family photos”. Do not “wake” them, not in this way. Simply smile and make verbal note of how lovely it is, speaking softly, calmly, to them. In their subconscious you will place the seed of Appreciation. Recognition. This benefits us all.

Change the mind, change the mindset.
Change the mindset, change the world.

Think about that.

WANDS
Something else that comes natural to humans are “wands”. Pointing. One finger, or a whole hand… legs even. No matter if that wand is a hand or hands, finger, a stone, a stick, etc, as long as it is personal, it Focuses the power of Intent during magickal workings. (If your mind races and Focus is difficult for you, go with it. Your train can veer off the tracks, but YOU are the Conductor Practitioner. RE-Focus on the wand.

What do you see? Is it your finger or do you use something that was given or created? Remember, YOU are the Conductor of that train. If your Spirit did not believe that, you would not be here.

Each Path has its own way of charging what they have chosen to utilize. Some specific Paths often raise the wand to the cosmos, channeling the energy into the item and then pointing their chosen item at their Work, or Craft, or Magick, to Charge it with both the Universe and Practitioner energies with Intent.

Others raise hands and then lay them on the item or person for Focused Magick, Healing, Protection, etc. (Practitioners of the Christian Path often do this.) Each practice is different in how they work their Magick or Medicine. Yes, even Islamic Traditions exist with this method.

“No Two Paths are the Same.”

SOUND
Noise, choosing a drum, choosing a rattle, choosing a bell, is Consciously choosing to be a Sound Manipulator of energetic vibration. Many choose to utilize sound as a clearer of energies, too. All sounds can be utilized depending on what you vibrate.

Some use it to chant, such as a Buddhist monk, or channel as a Wise Woman. It is used for meditation with the sacred vowel sounds applied to each energy …or chakra point.

SOME OTHER WAYS TO UTILIZE SOUND
Pre-Work or Craft to cleanse item
Clearing space. (clapping may be used here too)

You do what comes to you naturally, UNLESS you are choosing to walk a specific Path or Tradition. Regardless, something about sound clears energy from this plane. (If conditions are right it can come back, but it is cleared for the moment, i.e. an exorcism or house cleansing. More on this later.)

All in all, “tools” are how and what you make them. They are yours, a representative of your Higher Self… YOU.

Once you have chosen a Lesson from the three months ask yourself the following questions for your Journal Submission:

Why is this Lesson so poignant to you?

How did it effect/affect your practices? How did you modify it to incorporate it?

If you are not learning anything “new”, nor are you refreshing Thought or practice,
what keeps you content in these Lessons or
attending Three Circles Medicine & Magick for your First Degree in Wahya Circle?
(PLEASE NOTE: It is at this point that Practitioners begin to feel changes in themselves if
they are sincerely exploring what they are being presented.
If they are not, many do not make it past the next Quarter Turn of Lessons.)

This may all seem redundant to some Practitioners, but it is Wise to recollect, revisit, and rethink our practices as we move along in each Experience to determine where we are in order to begin mapping our reality, recognizing what is Self and what is not. We do this to determine growth versus stagnation. Understanding versus confusion. Gain versus loss. So on and so forth, in our personal practices. We are Wise to ask ourselves, “is this shoe really fitting” before we dive even deeper into our explorations of Magick and Medicine. Our Time is a precious commodity and personal practices deserve us to place as much into them as our Practicum Presenters do their Lessons.
